The under-16 boys team won their first six games of the tournament to advance to the championship final but dropped a heartbreaking 19-18 decision to Ontario in the gold medal game. “We had a chance for victory but we made mistakes and you can’t do that in the finals,” said under-16 boys head coach Bobby Singh. “It’s flag football at the end of the day and life goes on. That’s what I’ve got to teach my boys.

Next year the national championship is in PEI and hopefully we can get back and win it all.” The under-16 boys finished the tournament with an overall record of six wins and one loss while out-scoring their opponents by a combined 206-62.

Drey Blair (Surrey) was named the tournament’s defensive MVP. The other members of the under-16 boys team were: Devin Patterson (New Westminster), Tyler Moxin (Richmond), Gabriel Saklofsky (Richmond), Bobby Singh Jr. (Richmond), Jakob Desousa (Delta), Austin Blum (Delta) and Nolan McMurchy (Langley).

Despite only winning one game throughout the course of the tournament, the under-18 girls managed to advance to the bronze medal game but fell 14-0 to Manitoba. “While we would have preferred to have a better outcome, we are very proud of the way our team came together and competed,” said under-18 girls head coach Devin Arsenault. “We hope our presence at this year’s tournament will serve as motivation to continue to build the girls’ flag program in our province to the point where we can challenge for a medal nationally in the near future.”
