2012 BC Provincials

A VMFL Sweep!

In one of those rare occurrences the Vancouver Mainland Football League managed to not only place a team into the BC Provincial Championships at every level but those teams each walked away as Champions this past Sunday.

Players and coaches know just how hard it is to defeat all the teams in your division within the VMFL, but for some the road to Championship included Semi-Final Provincials and of course pulling out the victory on Sunday. A task that is not an easy one to do.

But for the Cloverdale Bobcats, Coquitlam Vikings, South Delta Rams and the Coquitlam Falcons they all managed to do just that and each were named BC Provincial Champions this past weekend.

2012-12-02-11aPeewee Division: For the Cloverdale Bobcats it was a tense first quarter as both the Abbotsford Falcons and the Bobcats played some tough defense keeping both teams off the score board.

By the third quarter the Bobcats offense found their groove and managed to put sixteen points up while the Cloverdale defense kept Abbotsford from finishing off their drives. Despite the Falcons being able to move the ball and establish big drives the Bobcats kept them out of the red zone and off the score board finishing the day with a 22-0 Bobcat win.

2012-12-02-12aJunior Bantam: The Coquitlam Vikings ended their regular season undefeated and marched through the VMFL playoffs with further success including the VMFL Championship game against the also undefeated Coquitlam Raiders. Their final test before the Provincials was an inter-zone game against the Valley Champion Abbotsford Falcons and with a convincing win the Vikings reached the BC Provincials.

Now only one team stood in their way of the “perfect” season and that team was the equally tough West Kelowna Sun Devils, a team that had their own tough road to climb including having a stop over in Victoria where they defeated the Renegades in their Semi-Final game.

The game opened up with the Sun Devils taking charge and before Coquitlam could blink an eye West Kelowna was up 14-0. Just before half the Vikings found some success and put their first major of the day up and as the teams headed into the locker rooms at half time with the score showing West Kelowna up only 14-8

After the half the Vikings came out a whole new team and while the offense managed to chunk off groups of yards the defense stuffed the Sun Devil offense. Late in the fourth West Kelowna fournd the end zone again to creep within six pionts but when it was all over the Vikings and their impressive second half game went on to a 26-20 victory.

2012-12-02-13aIn the 12 man division the South Delta Rams went on the road for two playoff games first defeating the North Surrey Tigers and then the Langley Mustangs to earn the VMFL Championship title.

With no integration of schedule with the VCFL this year the Rams didn’t know what to expect from the Valley Champion Abbotsford Falcons. The Rams came out strong scoring two majors in the first quarter and went up quickly. The Falcons fought back managing to slow down the Ram attack keeping the score at 15-0 as they headed into the locker room for half time.

As they played through the third quarter the Rams added another touchdown and the momentum continued on to the end of the game as the Rams capped off the fourth quarter with a 37-0 final score and claimed the Provincial Championship trophy.

2012-12-02-14aMidget: In a bazaar set of circumstances this Midget final set up to be one of the more interesting match ups as seen in many years. Tenth place Langley squared off against sixth place Coquitlam who by all means was technically undefeated on the field. A result of what accumulated to be one of the closest and toughest Midget division seasons ever.

It was the Stampeders that stuck first with not one but two straight field goals to jump out to a 6-0 lead in the second quarter. Coquitlam answered with a major just before the half to make it a 7-6 ball game at the break.

In the second half Langley made several attempts to stretch the field but Coquitlam picked off several deep balls leading to scoring drives by the Falcon offense and in the end a 21-6 final score. So despite the set back of three forfieted games, three trips to the Island including two away playoff games the Falcons overcame adversity to claim the BC Provincial title in the Midget division.

20121118_bantam9_aBantam: In the 9-man division if was a game for not just one title but two as North Delta and Richmond played for both the VMFL Championship and the BC Provincial Championship. Although it wasn’t the usual gunslinger style game that the fans have come to expect from the 9-man division it was chalk full of big plays as Richmond went on to a 41-6 victory over the Longhorns.

2012-11-25-01aAtom Division: With the League championship on the line the top seed Richmond Raiders struggled on Sunday to move the ball and the visiting Coquitlam Lions shut down the Raiders on their way to a 20-0 Victory and the 2012 VMFL Championship.
